Rock Identification Session

Monday, March 6

A monthly rock identification series will be held starting this month. Sessions will be held the first and second Mondays of each month. Rock hounds of all ages can bring in their plant fossils, minerals and rocks to be examined and identified by local geologist Thomas McLoughlin. Your rocks may be revealed as precious or semi-precious minerals. Some rocks could also be hidden treasures. Mr. McLoughlin is the author of two published books on plant fossils of the Virginia coalfields and southwestern West Virginia. They are available at Amazon.com. He started out as a “rock hound” then earned his bachelor’s degree at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky. and his masters degree at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky. Mr. McLoughlin is a former federal Mine Safety and Health Administration inspector of 28 years.
