Yes, the sheriff and deputies have the statutory authority to enforce the laws and ordinances of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Norton.

3. What is the difference between the sheriff’s office and the police department?

The sheriff’s office is responsible for providing courtroom security, civil process serving, and transporting juvenile and mental detainees. The sheriff’s office also provides the school with the DARE Program.

The Norton Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency and does all criminal investigations and complaints. They respond to all emergency 9-1-1 calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The sheriff’s office is open from 8:30 am to - 5:00 pm. These hours correspond with the administrative offices of the city and also are within the courts operational hours.
